'Son, I know you are new to the Borderguard and that Specialists enjoy certain privileges, but that does not mean I will tolerate insubordination and being adressed in that tone. Don't think you have more experience in this field than I have. You may have broken into a castle or two but those weren't Imperial fortresses guarding their homeland. There is a difference there you will only comprehend by gaining experience here. I've been spending my last 40 years here. I say that beats your month. So don't get cocky and pretend to know best. There are many ways this mission can fail. I will not see hubris be added to it. This mission is not a piece of cake, and even if it were I would not send a single soldier. If you are in a team, you operate as part of that team. And as your superior it is my duty to supply you with all the data you need. If I am holding back information it is because that information is irrelevant. I do not know how it worked with your previous employer, Verset, but in the military superiors and subordinates trust each other unconditionally. Do I make myself clear, soldier?'

Enrico did expect this kind of answer. Of course you are in a team, so you should work as a team. And it sounded like fun this mission, but still he doesn’t like losing people. And of course the commander knows almost nothing about him, so actually it was really to be expected. Nevertheless he didn´t like the commanders reaction, but he decided that it was too dangerous to object against it and discuss it further with the commander. And maybe the commander was right. He stood up answered with a loud, serious voice: “Sir, yes sir. You made it very clear.” After which he looked around the chamber and then he asked the commander: “Sir, do I have permission to leave this room and go to the horses already?”

The commander answered that he and the rest had permission to go and wished them luck.

Eli noted all the information the commander gave. She didn't got questions. It was an easy command. Enrico however did have some questions and Eli almost gazed at him, when he asked them. Unbelievable. Unbelievable disrepectfull. How could he say such things in public to a man who stood that much higher in the social piramid? It was almost insubordination.. A sermon did follow logically and Eli was happy that the social piramid was restored.

She left the room with the others and set forward to the stalls. She took one of the horses which stood ready for the group. Ready to go, she waited till the sign was given and left together with the others.

It seemed that Enrico had a knack for trying to piss people off. Getting on the Commander's bad side was hardly a solid move, even more for a rookie. Vince wondered if Enrico even did it on purpose. He definetely had to keep an eye on this one. To prevent him from getting on everyone's bad side, if anything. Hard to rely on someone you detest.
The commander dismissed them and Vince headed straight for the horses. He had already packed everything he would need, no need to delay. As the commander had said, the horses were saddled, packed and ready. Vince quicky went through the supplies in the saddle bag of his horse. Food, a bit of medical equipment, maps... and a cage with a Seype. For the message for the commander that would inform him on their decision. Randell had every detail covered, as usual. The group gathered, did a last check on the supplies, and mounted their horses. The Commander waited for them at the gate.
'Soldiers, the Borderguard depends on you. I will be expecting a report with your decision at this time tomorrow. Your destination can be reached before dusk if you ride fast. These are good horses, they can handle a day of riding fast if you give them time to recover. Just don't use them in battle. Ride safe and may the gods be with you. Move out!'
With those word the gate went open and the team spurred their horses, a long day ahead of them.

Vince was, had been, and would always be a terrible rider. Even though the commander had given him a horse with an easy temper (one of those details) the day completely drained him. The trip had been long and uneventful, and by the time they arrived at the planned location dusk had kicked in. Finding a good spot had taken a while too. The fortress had to be within walking distance but detection had to be avoided. They eventually found a small clearing in the forest where they set up camp and made a small campfire.

Vince looked at the maps. This was pretty much the only intel they were going to get, so any strategy they would use had to be based off the maps. 'Guys, now would probably be a good time to come up with the plan. The commander gave us two options: remain undetected at all times or create a distraction. Judging from this plan here we're in for a challenge either way. There's a couple of ways we could get in, it's getting out that's the hard part. One or two of us could probably sneak into the storage room to destroy the document but it gets extremely challenging after that. On the other hand...' he held up another scroll, containing information on reinforcements to the building and numbers of siege weapons, 'we could do a lot of damage here if we wanted to. I dunno... it just seems like a waste of a good chance to wreck some havoc. But it'd be dangerous, no matter wat. So we have to choose: all or nothing, or high chance of succes with a chance of taking casualties in the unavoidable fighting. What do you guys think?'

When everybody arrived the Commander explained the mission. And then they could ask questions. And mister Unstable Emotions had to say that he could do it by himself. That wasn’t only disrespectful towards the Commander, it was probably not even certain he would survive it. Border fortresses were not standard castles, especially not in this time and area. The Empire was smart enough to strengthen the fortresses so close to a main enemy fortress. The Empire relied more tactics than on brute force, this was where they differ with Avaren. And the reason why Avaren had much trouble with the Empire raids. About ninety percent of the people who could steal the greatest treasure out of a noble’s castle in Avaren would wound up dead in one of these fortresses. And F could know. He passed the border a few times and sold mages to the Empire. It remained by those few times because he knew that even the slightest wrong movement in one of these fortresses could cost you your head. Although the leaders of those fortresses were better at estimating the worth of a mage. They were more fair in paying the worth of your goods. But the threat of being eliminated was just too big a risk. Even little birds like Seypes would be noticed before they were one meter within the fortress. With defending tactics and precautions that could even withstand a thousand man assault without casualties. So for this mission you need teamwork and a really good tactic.
Anyway, the Commander answered tactically and Enrico accepted that answer, at least he pretended, it was very easy to it from his face. The Commander allowed them to leave, he wished them success and they left on F’s first big mission. The trip went well for F, the horse was very obedient, the weather was nice and the air fresh. Although it seemed not everyone enjoyed the ride. Vince didn’t look too comfortable on his horse.
At dusk they arrived at the planned location. They set up camp at a small clearing in the forest and the time for planning and deciding the tactic had arrived. Vince took the leading role upon him and began explaining the choices. After that he asked the opinion of the other team members. F decided to be the first to speak his mind. “Well, this is a hard decision. If we try to sneak in, we have to do it real good. They will not let their guard down at any cost and their security is pretty tight. I speak from experience. I have heard from master thieves from Avaren that didn’t come further that the first door they came through in one of these fortresses. Yet if we create a diversion we may lead their attention away from their real goal, but that doesn’t mean their guard is down for other manoeuvres. Whatever choice we make, it has to be well thought out and has to have a very small failing factor. Just trying your best isn’t going to work here. Without a fool-proof plan and several backup plans in case something unexpected happens we can forget even reaching their storage room, let alone complete the mission. This might sound pessimistic yet it is the hard reality. This isn’t a battle of muscles and power, his is a battle of minds. Because we are up to a fortress of the most tactical country we have ever seen. So if we want to complete the mission we have to outsmart them, which is no easy task. And one more thing. We are a team. So if we want to complete the mission trust is required. If we don’t trust each other, the team work will falter. I hope you understand that. If you don’t trust me it is your problem and that lack of trust could cost us succeeding this mission and even our lives.” F stopped talking and waited for the opinion of the others.

The commander did give them permission to go. He was the first one to leave. Enrico had around ten minutes now. He headed straight away to the horses, he supposed that everybody would that.
When Enrico walked to the horses, he thought about his words with the commander. It wasn’t a smart way to do that. First of all his intonation was awful, secondly he insulted the commander. It should have been better when Enrico talked to the commander about it, when they were alone. The commander didn’t possibly know much about his short borderguard history . He already turned the switch in his head en could think straight right now. He put his thoughts away about it. Right now he had to focus on a mission. Get that document and destroy it, that was main priority.
Enrico arrived at the horses, checked is his stuff. In the saddlebags he found food, medical equipment and maps. He studied all of the maps so he did know where to go. Enrico checked also his saddle and the horse itself. It looked like the horse was in top condition, just like Enrico. He mounted his horse when the rest also did it. The commander waited at the gate and said something to them. After which they moved out.
Enrico was glad to get out and was filled with lots of energy. He was ready for everything. Finally he could do what he liked to do. Where he was trained for.
They travelled at high speed. He didn’t think it was smart to do, but the commander wanted them to do it. At dusk they arrived at the planned location and the find a nice place to sleep. It was a clearing in the fortress. He put his horse at rest and got some for a fire. Nobody would notice that he had taken some wood from the forest for the fire. So at the point they stayed invisible.
After the camp had been sat up they came together. Vince started talking, it was quite interesting. He was thinking about his words, so he didn’t answer straight away. F. did.
F. did say something what sounded smart and stupid at the same time. Of course they needed to plan something, but there wasn’t enough time. Enrico reacted straight away: “Well, if it isn’t dangerous why are we here then. And getting hurt is also part of the job. I would say we do both. Maybe is Louis capable of producing little bombs. If we can create a diversion with those bombs when we need to get out, then that problem has a greater chance of succes. I volunteer for going inside the castle. About the diversion further I have no ideas. What I do know is that the more people go inside the castle, the bigger is the chance of failure. The people who don’t go inside can create a bigger diversion or maybe even a real looking attack at the fortress.
Also F. do you really think that we have time for making plans like you suggest. If you have time it is a good idea, but that is something we don’t have. And did you ever tried before, entering a fortress of the empire? Because like you said: doing your best isn’t an option, just as failure. So heard of isn’t good enough either.
Of course, when you go on a mission like this. You try to prepare for everything. But like I said before, there isn’t time enough. And if your ‘heard of stories’ are true, than I suppose the empire will be here really soon.” Enrico did pause and continued “I don’t know your specialties or your connections. But what I do know is who I am and what I am capable of. I was trained to do this. I am not some sort of master thief. I only liquidated a couple of them. And I also agree F. that trust is important. Surviving this mission can’t be done without a team and without trusting each other.
I guess we need to be open toward each other. So I suggest you could start telling something F. as sign as trust”

“I could do that. Yet then I can ask you who you killed to become so mentally unstable. Yet I don’t need to get an answer to that question. Everyone has reasons to do something. Things like changing your name or killing someone. The trust I ask for does not need a sign. We need to accept every member of this team as who they are. All with their own reasons and all with their own way of doing things. Without signs of trust. True trust does not need signs. True trust means the person will tell you voluntarily. Because that person trust you. Demanding a sign of trust does mean you do not trust me yet. Which is too bad. But I hope you will trust me some day.”

“Indeed, I have sometimes problems with mine emotions F. True. But I can handle it, so don’t worry about it. Everything is under control when I have real work to do. And you are right, you don’t have to give me a sign. But it certainly would help in trusting each other.
And I am now willing to tell you something about me. I have always been in the field and was learned to don’t have any feelings. It could be an obstacle when you have a mission. When you are in the field you should be able to do anything. Like I said before today, where I am isn’t a god. And that is not without a reason.
But someday they let me down, I died and later on I found the love of my life. And there it went wrong with me. But that’s enough for now. I suggest we work out a plan, get some food and try to stay undetected here.
So if you don’t mind I will patrol the area, trying to remove some of our traces.”

Enrico left.. ENRICO LEFT!? Weren't they in a meeting? She just couldn't understand it at all. He just had a nonsense talk about who he was and why he acted like he acted and afterwords he just left. Why would he talk about his life now and shy did he leave all of sudden afterwords? He was in the team for a month, so why didn't he tell anything before if he wanted to. And why would he tell a story for half? If you didn't want to tell anything - and they hadn't asked for it - just don't talk about it. Are all men this stupid? She looked towards Louis and made a confused gesture. Maybe he could give her a clue about Enrico's behavior. She hoped that someone finally would say something helpful. She wasn't a planner herself and really didn't want to look stupid when she proposed a tactic, but if nobody was going to say something, she probably had to.

Enrico wasn’t sure if his plan did work. Anyway he left the group cause nobody reacted for a two minutes. Maybe he succeeded. Nevertheless he went into the forest, looking for traces they made. Enrico never lied and he didn’t now. And the commander was right, if we wanted to destroy some stuff there this was a great opportunity. Still he had his thoughts about this team. Perhaps the definition of high tier was different at the borderguard than at the SPD. No one of them would made it to field worker. They are fine men probably and are able to fight, but it aren’t spooks of course. He could leave the team and go into the castle alone and retrieve that document. But it would cause a lot of trouble for him. That was for sure, or he could disappear after he gave the document to Vince as proof he got the document. Not a great plan tough.
Enrico couldn’t find other traces, which could be seen by a normal soldier. So he decided it was enough. F. was probably wright about the mindgames, if you are not trained to play them you will lose from your enemy.
“Mommy, Mommy. There are some strange people at the open place in the forest.” Heard Enrico. He went to the source of the sound and did find a little cabin. Two girls a male and a female were sitting outside, Enrico saw a boy running to them. That was the one he heard. “Mommy, some soldiers are down in the forest. And they look strange.” The male answered, most likely it was his dad. “Are you sure it aren’t soldiers from the fortress?” “I am sure daddy.” Answered the boy. The female watched at the male and looked happy. “Good job son,” answered the man. “That means food for us. I will go straight away to the fortress. You all go inside.” Everybody went inside, including the male. Probably to get his coat and lantern.
Enrico could do two things now, returning to their camp wasn’t an option. The man would be gone and then it was too late. Taking for granted that the empiresoldiers would believe that male and his team members believe Enrico. Otherwise he could intimidate them. Enrico did choose for option two. He undressed himself and walked to the cabin. Put almost all his gear of and waited for the man to come out. And yes indeed the man came out of the cabin. Enrico sneaked after him, took his knife and grabbed the man. “Sleep well mister” said Enrico and he separated his head from the body. He grabbed it and threw it against the door. “Who is there.” Said the female and opened the door. She stood their speechless and before she realised what happened she was gone. Enrico’s knife was between her eyes. Enrico entered the house and find the children. “Good evening children.” And after some minutes they were gone too. Enrico searched the house for stuff and didn’t find much of interest. He did find some food, medical supplies and weapons. But nothing of importance. He dragged the headless body inside and put all the corpses in the house, cleaned his knife and left the house. That was the first and hopefully last threat for their mission. He went back to the camp with the food and the head.
Then he could show them what he was capable of and how easy they were already detected. He wouldn’t sleep good this night, that was for sure. He decided to find a big tree and climb as high as possible to sleep in. No problem at all.
He came close at the camp and heard some talking. He couldn’t hear what is was. He looked from the forest and everything looked fine. Before he would return to them he searched a tree somewhere close to the camp, but far enough to not be noticed.

The mission was simple, get inside the fortress, destroy the document and leave without a trace. Or cause a lot of havoc. That was up to them. And although the mission sounded simple, there were some complex steps they had to take. One, get inside, two get out unseen. And, well, walking through an enemy fortress wasn't really easy either. So, shit could get tricky along the way.
And Enrico thought he could do this alone. He is getting in quite some fights today, this is the second one already. Why does he keep doing that? But, luckily, he was showed his place by the commander.
There where no further questions, so they left for their horses and rode towards the fortress. Louis liked the ride there, the weather was good, there where no complications along the way and they arrived on time and set up camp.

Vince took the lead and started talking about a strategy. Louis listened while he looked at a map. the fortress had some weak points, but they should be guarded. F actually came with a good solution, back-up plans. That was wise in this situation. And they could get a plan ready pretty soon. It wouldn't be the best plan, but it could work. Enrico didn't think so, however. He wanted to use bombs as a diversion.
'I don't bring gunpowder on missions when my stock is low. I did order some, but it hadn't arrived yet. And the commander isn't really happy when I've got gunpowder. Don't get the reasoning though. I mean, I only almost blew up that wall! And it is over three years ago now. I can handle the stuff.' Afterwards, F and Enrico talked a lot about trust. Why would you discuss that now, right before a mission? We even arrived at the location. Enrico left after that, to remove their traces.
Louis studied the map, and saw that the walls of the fortress weren't that high, and it did have a moat. Louis sensed that Eli looked at him, and when he turned his head, she look confused. Trying to relieve the tension, he jokingly said: 'The walls of the castle aren't that high. If we have some good swimmers, maybe they could jump from the fortress into the moat!' He smiled at his colleagues.

“The walls of the castle aren't that high. If we have some good swimmers, maybe they could jump from the fortress into the moat!”
“Well Louis, I know that was a joke, but maybe we should see for ourselves. People, I didn’t want to reveal this yet but I guess it is better for you to know. It is also too bad that Enrico ran off.” F dropped his mantle and took off his shirt. Then he turned his back to the fire. On his back stood a tattoo shaped like a sword from his shoulders to the lower part of this back. The word Semasepia was written on his shoulders. F spoke again. “This tattoo proves I am a member of the Order of the Swordsmen of Pride. For those of you who doesn’t know us, we swore loyalty to our swords and swords alone. We live according to a certain code of pride. Unfortunately the king didn’t like the idea of an order of swordsmen that didn’t want to obey him when his orders were not righteous according to them. This is the reason many have been killed as precaution. Though we live on. Some fled to the Empire, others like me kept it hidden. This action might let you capture me and hand me over to the king yet that risk I have to take. For the reason I suspect that the lord of the fortress we are ordered to sneak in, is also a swordsmen of the Order. And if that is the truth, I can request according to the code request a visit. A visit according to the code cannot be turned down and neither party is allowed to attack the other party. Those who break the rule must face execution and are no longer worthy of life, for breaking the vow to his or her sword. If the commander of the fortress is a member we can enter the fortress, scout a bit around without attacking, and plan an even better strategy, according to the plan of the fortress. And finding out if he is member is very simple. A member of the Order will always engrave the name of his sword in the place he lives and because the members of the Order aren’t wanted men here, they will do it in their front gate. The only thing I need to know if there is a name engraved in the gate and if so, the gate will open without them allowed to do anything.” F put his shirt and mantle back on and waited for the reaction of the other members.

Vince shook his head. 'Not going to work, F. We can check the gate for you but using your plan is a bad idea. Sure, we can just walk in there. But then what? Get to the supply-chamber, find the document and just burn the thing where they can see us? That would be missing the point. We must destroy the document without the enemy knowing there even was a document there. Even if you just go in to look around there would be suspicion if we went with you. I for one am a familiar face to these people and Cookie even more so. So you'd have to go alone and only do some recon. Not very useful, we already have quite a bit of intel on this fortress and I don't think that extra bit is worth the risk of suspicion it brings.'
A moment of silence. 'You'll have to tell me about this Order of yours once we get back. Here's my deal: you stick with the borderguard and continue to be valuable to our cause, and I won't rat you out to the Commander. The way I see it you can practice the beliefs of your Order without fear of prejudice, but I won't be half as friendly if it's going to get in our way.' Vince stood up and reached out his hand for a handshake. 'Do we have a deal, F?'

Wile he was looking for a tree he heard F. saying something. He couldn't hear a thing, but it could be interesting of course. Enrico walked to the border of the forest and saw F. putting his t-shirt and mantle back on.

Enrico saw a glimp of a tattoo at his back. That was quite interesting. If he saw it right, that F. guy was a member of the order of Swordsmen of pride. That explained why he was a member of the team and he probably had some interesting skills. He would arrange a private talk with F. about the order.

He noticed that Vince was blackmailing F. That was not nice of Vince. And it created a lack of trust and loyalty.

Enrico walked back into the forest and found a very nice tree. That problem was solved, now he returned to the camp.

"Well guys, the first threat has been neutralized." and he showed them the head of the man.

“Well Vince, we have a deal. Talking about the order is not forbidden, it was just safer to keep quiet.” At that moment Enrico returned to the camp, carrying in his hand the head of a man. F reacted immediately by drawing a circle and then in the circle a cross, with one line not crossing the other line in the mid, so it looked like a sword. F spoke the words “May soul and sword be united” and then walked towards Enrico. “Enrico, are you insane? Why did you kill someone? With people gone it will be a matter of time before we are going to be detected. Moreover, you took a life. You shouldn’t act easy over killing people you know.”
